ComingSoon.net yesterday posted a first-look at the new generation of Smurf.

I’m assuming everyone fully appreciates the wonderfulness that was The Smurfs, in all its gloriously silly wonderfulness.  We’ll all be on the same page there.  So I’d be interested to hear people’s thoughts on this.

The film, directed by Raja Gossnel and due out late next year, marks the original Blue Man Group’s first forray into both cinema and the third dimension.  But does anyone else think this looks like an odd step backwards to the GCI of a deacde ago?  There’s something oddly plasticky and artificial about the image, where something more organic would surely have worked more neatly.  It looks like the toy Smurfs I used to have, rather than the actual Smurfs I watched religiously on the telly.

Not that artistic license shouldn’t be taken, and I’m all for people taking a brand and making it their own.  And we’d obviously need to see it in motion before making any judgements (plus there’s the far more pressing issue of whether the actual film’s any good, y’know?). This image, though?  I’m not so sure.
