Music: The Cubical

Van Gogh ain't got jack on these guys!

Van Gogh ain't got jack on these guys!

Our band are on tour at the moment (PLUG) and we have the wonderful fortune to be joined by the up-and-coming-up Scouse band known as The Cubical on several dates around the country. Not really having heard of their music I didn’t really know what to expect, but it only took their opening number to grip me for life. Churning, swirling, gruff voiced blues at its finest!

A blend of everything great about classic blues (Howlin’ Wolf,  John Lee Hooker, Mississipi Fred McDowell) is brought to life by a modern approach to an old genre. Like a fine chocolate cake made up of all the flavours you love the most, but with that extra special home-made topping that only years of refining the classic recipe can provide, The Cubical have poured the best of last 80 years of musical influence into a mixing bowl and managed to produce one of the finest EP’s I have heard in a good long while.

“The Great White Lie” is six tracks that perfectly exemplifies how dynamic this great band are. Take a pinch of The Magic Band, a dash of The Zutons and a moderate sprinkling of Mr. Tom Waits and you’ll have a rough idea of just how special this slice of cake is.  They can excite you, making you nod along with their chugging blues, haunt you with their dark sinister vocals and even make your mind spin with the way the two guitars compliment each other a ‘la Rolling Stones. The final track, ‘Red Rag’ is a particular highlight of just how deep this band can drag you down into their abyss of vudu-trance-tarot-plane-blues madness!

This is as close as you’re going to get to that wonderful period of music that seems more and more distant and blurry with every passing day.

The Cubical’s Debut Album: “Come Sing These Crippled Tunes” is out September 14th – I suggest you go out and buy it just so you can say you were there when it all kicks off – because its gonna’!
