Bioshock is great but its way overrated in an 'Arty' way. At the end of the day its still just a game about shooting shit in the face with weaponry. It even has 'end of level bosses' for gods sake. The bit with Sander Cohen is great but its nothing more than a well put together set piece.

Great article and pretty well argued, but I completely disagree. Its atmosphere was incredible, but I'd say that the narrative does the opposite of allowing for "our own discovery, our own exploration". It's very rigidly linear, and it lacks the subtle manner in which Valve's narratives are communicated. Those games lead the player on, and if they're looking the right way - which was about 90% of the time thanks to some amazing design - there's a chance they'll see a seemingly incidental, but often crucial, event taking shape. Half-Life still substitutes gated story sequences for cut scenes, but BioShock leans entirely on that. It's not like we're creating our own experience in any way - a la Far Cry 2 - and the vast majority of the player's time is, as Anthony Burch helpfully points out (http://www.destructoid.com/rev-rant-fun-isn-t-enough-142052.phtml - about 6:30), spent killing dudes. It was a fascinating world to be a part of, but that doesn't make BioShock unique. Use of hard gating is unnecessary these days and narrative told through the player's eyes is nothing new (not that it does a particularly great job of that), so I can't say I see where you're coming from on some of these counts.
