Games: Writers 101

Metal Gear Solid: "rubbish," according to Cecil.

Metal Gear Solid: "rubbish," according to Cecil.

I wandered over to an unassumingly classy little conference venue in Leeds tonight, for a talk from a variety of games developers on the writing process for video games.

I’ll be reporting back on this in more detail for Resolution in the next couple of days, but it was an interesting couple of hours, in which some of the leading figures in game narrative discussed, often very passionately, their views on the role of story within the medium, and how best to progress the art.

Charles Cecil, of Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword fame, was particularly vocal, stating his distaste for the Metal Gear Solid series, as well as publishers demanding unnecessary multiple endings.

Thoroughly interesting stuff, even though it was more aimed at budding games writers than us journo-hacks. Better still: being able to swap a badge for a free pint afterwards.  That’s always a winner for me.
